recent News

The Archbishop says Christians don't have a lock on heaven.

Re the anti-homosexuality row: "Quite a lot of people had to learn that the Church of England was not just them.

"What I heard from both sides of the controversy was that 'We thought the Church of England was us and people like us, and maybe one or two others who did not matter too much'. There was a sense on both sides of shock and dispossession."

Also, the WSJ reports that the GOP is mobilizing Conservative Churches. Five million conservative Christians failed to turn out four years ago. Young people [of the Bill Clinton era], Seniors [who don't particularly like medicare] and Hispanics, Arabs [not too fond of our Iraq policies], single women [reproductive rights], and independents [who get their news from Comedy Central] all are leaning toward Kerry. Here is another link.

Note that on Sunday we prayed for both the GOP AND the protestors. God's love is wide.

Sunday

former priest-in-charge, a popular one, visited today. Told lots of good stories about the former bishop, and had a story for everyone. He is a friend of my mentor, Fr. John Graham, who I learned is now rector-elect of Grace, Georgetown.

So, here is a test for Dante's inferno. Enjoy. Some of the questions are a bit tasteless.

A few weeks ago I told the secretary not to write any checks or pay any bills until I went through them closely again. The sexton asked her to order some food for the soup kitchen. She told him she wasn't writing any checks.

Must work that out.

Cash Flow

Off to Rochester. Summer not an easy time to pay bills - church bills.

A good part of my job is worrying about property. The tenant came over and told me that the state payed an enormous amount for her heating this last winter. I remember seeing the windows open on the top floor.

summer almost ending

Summers almost ending. The Manhattanville board gathered to discuss our future projects. Winnie, Jonah [from Harrison] talked a bit about college chaplaincy and then reflected upon how few young clergy there are.

Also working on the newsletter.

Jonah wondered if we should use the readings to evangelize Romans. I mean, Roman Catholics. Especially with the recent wheat case - where the church refused to give communion to a young girl who has intestinal problems - the Catholic church has one more PR disaster. We should take advantage of this.

Must get invitations to the clambake out also.

Voting for God

"We believe that claims of divine appointment for the President, uncritical affirmation of his policies, and assertions that all Christians must vote for his re-election constitute bad theology and dangerous religion.
We believe that sincere Christians and other people of faith can choose to vote for President Bush or Senator Kerry - for reasons deeply rooted in their faith. "

A petition worth signing from Sojourners [a christian evangelical magazine]

Today we have our Sundays on Thursdays Barbecue. We'll have it inside.

John Updike

"The Christian faith has given me comfort in my life, and, I would like to think, courage in my work. For it tells us that truth is holy, and truth-telling a noble and useful profession; that ther reality around us is created and worth celebrating; that men and women are radically imperfect and radically valuable... we are freed from certain secular illusions and monochromatic tyrannies of hopeful thought. To be Christian in this day and age, as in the time of imperial Rome, is to be unorthodox, and readers should look elsewhere for the consolations of conventional sentiment and the popular, necessary religion of optimism" quoted in Context [Martin Marty's rag] from More Matter: Essays and Criticism (Knopf)

Back From Hawaii

Came back today. The sexton reported floods from last week. He exuberantly said, "but we have a pump now" that was bought by Henry.

He also suggested fixing the doors.

One of our tenants is having money problems. We deposited a check for her, and gave back a portion minus a previous loan. She asked for another loan.

The landscaper said that he could work a lot less if we got rid of the leaves and weeds ourselves.

Getting the chaplaincy board together, and catching up on email.

Went to Rotary today. Was supposed to meet the district governor who was about 1 1/2 hour late. Not sure why I was asked to come, since I'm not yet that active. I'm on the "health and wellness" committee which means we send flowers and cards to sick rotarians. He gave a short talk about his vision for Rotary. He suggested we never miss a meeting. I suggest that to all my parishioners also. :)

I recently made a comment on a conservative blog. One person responded, "go home you revisionist."

Vacation

I'll be on vacation next week. A friend from seminary, who used to work in NY and now attends here, will be supplying.

Joan of Arc: I hear voices telling me what to do. They come from God.
Robert: They come from your imagination.
Joan: Of cours. That is how the messages of God come to us
